NAME: KLavier Gavin
AGE: 25
CANON: Ace Attorney
CANON HISTORY: link
CANON PERSONALITY: Klavier Gavin is, at his heart, a good guy. That's not something that can be said about many people who stand behind the prosecutor's bench in the world of Ace Attorney, and especially not throughout the so-called, "Dark Age of the Law," during which he's practicing. Most of the prosecutors aren't necessarily bad people, but Klavier is affable, kind, generous, and happiest when he and his opponent can meet as equals rather than preferring a trial where the scale is tipped in his favor. Where other prosecutors are concerned about their win/loss record, Klavier's primary concern is making sure the truth is brought out and the guilty person is convicted. In the end this costs him multiple important people in his life, but his belief in his principles never wavers.
Unlike other prosecutors, Klavier doesn't have the sort of relationship with the police department that results in them colluding to keep evidence from the defense. On the contrary, he deliberately antagonizes the lead investigator on the cases shown in the game and ultimate prefers not to be involved in investigations, instead leaving those to detectives and focusing instead on familiarizing himself with the evidence brought to him. This changes, however, when he's personally invested in the cases being handled. When he's personally involved in an incident during a Gavinners' concert, Klavier initiates an investigation immediately, and while he still leaves the bulk of the work to the police force, he's still actively engaged with the case. Additionally, he involves himself in the investigation of the death of Constance Courte despite not even being the prosecutor on the case; he simply cares that much about Constance and about ensuring the truth is discovered.
That doesn't mean he sits idle when he is prosecuting, however. Klavier is very hard working and doesn't rest on the laurels of being a genius. He writes all the songs for his band, The Gavinners, and is also deeply involved in the production both of their albums and their live shows. He describes that hugely successful part of his life as merely a hobby, however, and if something involving world tours, multiple albums, and constant rehearsal and practice is just a hobby, then imagine the amount of dedication and passion he brings to his practice of law. He never stops learning about the things he loves and while outwardly he's obnoxiously arrogant, he does have something of a humble streak that comes out when he discusses his mentors or people he admires (for example Lamiroir or Professor Constance Courte, his legal mentor).
That being said, not everything about Klavier is flawlessly photogenic or positive. The worst of him comes out when he's unable to control things and in particular when the things he can't control are also things he can't prove the truth of. During the Gavinners' concert that ultimately leads to a murder trial and the breakup of the band, he encounters Apollo and is shown to be having something of a tantrum because he's lost his keys, his motorcycle wouldn't start, and one of his bandmates missed a cue. Klavier does attempt to be his usual charming self, but it only really settles back into place after he's gotten Apollo to help prove that Daryan did miss his cue--to prove that Klavier is right and that he knew the truth all along.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Klavier is a genius prosecutor who passed the bar and entered the courtroom by the age of seventeen while also supporting a burgeoning musical career as the frontman and songwriter for The Gavinners. As such, he's skilled in the courtroom and on a musical stage. Beyond that, he can drive both cars and motorcycles, can speak a little German (not as much as he would have most people believe) and Borginian, and even without the help of the world here, he's able to make music play out of thin air. What can he say, it's a gift.

AU NAME: Kyouya Garyuu
AU AGE: 23
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Kyouya bears Klavier's "younger" appearance, with shorter, lighter hair and a somewhat edgier sense of style
AU HISTORY: I wanted to keep some of this fairly flexible since due to time constraints I wasn't able to get all of it set in stone with Vie and I didn't want to create possible conflicts, but I'll fill it in as best as I can since yeah, that's pretty gappy!
✪ Born and raised not far from Recolle
✪ His parents were affluent but with very high expectations for him
✪ Luckily, he met them but not without a great deal of effort; he's always been incredibly hard working when there's something he wants and in this case it's his parents' approval. That doesn't mean that the burden of expectation doesn't chafe him sometimes though, especially as he's gotten older and seen the liberty with which Miai is able to live his life
✪ That said, he worries about his brother because he doesn't always show the same kind of focus and motivation, but in the end Kyouya's more than willing to take on the brunt of their parents' expectations. He doesn't resent his brother or even his parents particularly, just the situation.
✪ That doesn't mean he doesn't give him a hard time from time to time, nor that he's completely immune to a certain amount of envy where his brother is concerned. Klavier's always known he's a good looking, talented guy, and he's always had an interest in performing in front of audiences. It gives him the approval he craves on a much larger scale. Unfortunately, it wasn't something he could foster at home, with his parents really only encouraging him in his more serious, career-minded interests. The middle ground between these two things was him being allowed to take instrument lessons privately--first piano, later guitar--and having his interest in poetry writing (really lyric writing) indulged.
✪ After high school, with Miai's performing career underway in earnest, Kyouya decided to work with his parents to able to study abroad. While literally joining a circus wasn't the future he would've wanted for Miai, it was something, and by taking off the way he did (this is based on conversations with Vie indicating around the time that Eichi/Miai would run away to join the circus) Miai essentially put himself outside of Kyouya's sphere of influence. It hurt, naturally, to see his little brother leave like that, but also made the decision to leave himself that much easier. His parents were reluctant to say goodbye to a second child but it wasn't a difficult conversation once Kyouya focused on the practical side, since (unlike circus skills) an international education would be an asset regardless of what field he entered, so he moved to Japan for his undergrad. In reality his motivation was 50% curiosity and interest in the rest of the world, 25% to get away from the disappointment and hurt of Miai's departure, and 25% to live some part of his life away from his parents' expectations.
✪ It was while living in Japan that he met Leo and became the principal lyricist and guitarist for 5cm/s
✪ The two of them became fast friends with their similar outgoing personalities and exceptional talents. Kyouya admired Leo, the free way he lived his life and his skill at composition in particular, but they never moved past the point of being friends. Performing gave him a kind of release he never really found at home, too, a sense that all of him could be valued and not simply the practical parts that could go on a resume, and he credits Leo greatly for giving him a place to discover that. He considers him one of his best friends, though of course with Leo it can be difficult to tell how that's returned--Leo loves the entire world, after all.
✪ He continued his studies--international relations, which he always found humorously ironic--while playing with the band. He'd always loved music and while his parents supported his interest, they never saw it as something he could do for a career, but playing with the band here feels different, hopeful. Needless to say, he was disappointed when Leo left but obviously the band couldn't continue without him. The absence of that outlet in Kyouya's life was significant, though, and continues even now.
✪ It's not like he followed Leo exactly but he did transfer to Recolle U the summer after Leo's departure and has been enrolled here ever since. It was an easy choice since it's close to home, close to Miai (he thinks, at least, since he's done his best to stay in touch but with touring his brother is often not the easiest to pin down, a source of continuing frustration for Kyouya), and happens to be where Leo is as well.
✪ He still writes songs and plays when he gets the chance--he's that guy in the quad with a guitar and can occasionally be found at open mic nights, though his style is on the harder side for small venues like coffee shops so that's pretty rare--but with the end of his undergrad looming, he's feeling the pressure to decide between music or further education
AU PERSONALITY: In general Kyouya's AU personality is not dramatically different from his canon one. He's still generous, flirty, ambitious, and arrogant. The largest differences really stem from him being an older brother rather than having an older brother. He's very protective of and concerned about Miai which isn't an outlet he has in canon. In canon Klavier's generosity is very equitable but here in Recolle he'll have his favorites. The bulk of this was on focused on Miai when they were both younger but as Miai's literally left the nest and started to make his own, unconventional life out of reach of Kyouya's attentions, he's found other ways to get it out of his system. Someone needed to make sure Leo was eating properly when they were working together, for example.
Additionally, because he doesn't have that older brother to guide him toward a career in law, he's more invested in his music but also lacking that direction in terms of a career outside of music. Before leaving for Japan, music was a quiet passion because he felt confined by the expectations of his parents, meaning it wasn't something he could freely pursue (unlike in canon where he somehow manages both careers flawlessly; this version is a little more human that way). He thought with 5cm/s he might be able to make a career out of music but when the band broke up that stopped being an option, mostly because it's not something Kyouya wants to pursue on his own. He's not scrambling now because Kyouya Garyuu does not scramble, but he's definitely experiencing a kind of tension that never really appears in canon. He misses performing and being a part of a group but he also believes now that it's over he has to move on and decide what he wants to do for his "real" career, simultaneously to please his parents, look after his own future, and leave Miai the freedom to keep performing if that's what he wants. I'm looking forward to exploring this tension in particular so I don't want to nail down too much of how it manifests, but compared to the arrow-straight certainty of purpose Klavier shows in canon, this uncertainty is a huge difference.
